Your step-by-step guide to applying to CalArts

We welcome your interest in joining our creative community.

Below is a step-by-step guide to applying to California Institute of the Arts. These steps can be completed relatively quickly or over the course of several months.

See application deadlines and fees

If you have any questions along the way, please reach out to our Office of Admissions at admissions@calarts.edu or by calling 800-545-ARTS (800-545-2787). We’re here to help!

Step 1: Create an application account

Start the process of applying to CalArts by creating an application account.

This step registers your interest in CalArts and allows us to send communication about your application-in-progress. The email address used to create your application account will be the primary method we’ll use to communicate with you, so please use an account that you plan to check regularly throughout the application process.

Step 2: Research programs of study and CalArts schools

When applying to CalArts, you must select a specific program of study in one of our six schools: Art, Critical Studies, Dance, Film/Video, Music, or Theater. We do not offer a general program of study nor a “foundation year” program.

Not sure where to start? Check out all the programs that CalArts has to offer.

Find out more about our creative community and your program of interest by attending an admissions information session or event.

Step 3: Plan application timeline

Your next chance to attend CalArts as a full-time student will be for the Fall 2025 semester.

Step 4: Start an application

Start an application for your program of interest. Starting now will allow us to best help you as you prepare your application materials.

Start your application

It’s also possible to apply to more than one program at CalArts. To do so, simply start two applications, one for each of your programs of interest. Please note: An application fee is required for each application.

Step 5: Review admission requirements

Each program at CalArts has its own specific requirements: Some programs require an audition, some a portfolio, and some require both. These are a critical part of your application, as well as the accompanying artist statement.

Admission requirements by program

It may take you some time to prepare these materials. Find out more about preparing these creative and written materials by reaching out to your admissions counselor or attending an event.

Step 6: Request required materials

Within the online application portal, you should also:

  • Upload unofficial transcripts showing all academic work.
  • Request letters of recommendation be sent to CalArts.
  • We do not require the SAT, ACT, or GRE as part of your application.
  • If you are a transfer student, you should review our Transfer Applicant Guidelines.
  • If you are an international applicant, you should review our International Applicant Guidelines.

Access your application

Request, gather, and submit these materials well in advance of the application deadline.

Step 7: Research financial aid

There are many ways to finance a CalArts education, and we encourage you to explore potential funding sources as you prepare your application.

  • Financial aid for BFA students (undergraduate)
  • Financial aid for MFA/MA/DMA students (graduate)
  • Financial aid for international students

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form typically opens in October. If you are a US citizen or eligible noncitizen, complete the FAFSA to be considered for the most financial aid possible.

The CalArts Office of Financial Aid is here to help. For additional assistance, please contact the Office of Financial Aid at finaid@calarts.edu.

Step 8: Complete and submit your application

You’re almost there! Take a moment to make sure that all of the information in your application is correct, and that you have uploaded the final versions of any audition, portfolio, or writing pieces. Then send it to us as soon as you are ready! This is also when you will pay your application fee. We look forward to receiving your completed application.

Finish and submit your application

Step 9: Check application status

You made it! Thank you for your patience as our faculty review committee considers your application and supporting materials. Applications often take several months to process.

After you apply, you can check your application status in the portal. If you have any missing materials be sure to send them to us.

Check application status

Step 10: Pay enrollment deposit

If you’ve been offered admission to CalArts and would like to enroll, you’ll need to submit your nonrefundable $400 enrollment deposit and your decision reply form by the deadline stated on the acceptance letter. To do so, log in to the Application Portal. Contact your admission counselor for more questions.

Submitting the enrollment deposit secures your place in the incoming class and ensures your scholarship (if applicable). Your acceptance into the program and merit-based scholarship are guaranteed until the enrollment deadline (or an approved extension). After this deadline, program enrollment and scholarship status may be subject to change.
